What is hair loss?
While many people think of this as hair loss, it's actually hair shedding. It’s normal to shed between 50 and 100 hairs a day. However, hair loss occurs when new hair doesn't replace the hair that has fallen out. The medical name for this type of hair shedding is telogen effluvium.
Autoimmune disease that causes hair to fall out in one or more small patches is called Alopecia areata.

Here are the most common causes of hair loss:
Hereditary hair loss
Immune system overreacts
Some drugs and treatments
Hairstyles that pull on the hair
Harsh hair-care products
Nutritional deficiencies.

Excessive washing, bleaching, brushing, and heat styling can also have an impact on how much of your hair falls out every day. Once your hair follicle has been stretched or split as a result of a cosmetic hair treatment, the structure of the hair follicle is compromised.

In this video we have discussed some of the best home remedies to control hair loss and promote hair growth.

Iron
( )
Iron helps your body produce haemoglobin, a protein in your red blood cells. It carries oxygen to your body’s cells, helping them grow and repair. This includes your body’s cells that help with hair growth.
Hair loss due to iron deficiency may especially be noticed in:
Menstruating women who may not get sufficient iron from diet.
Vegetarian or vegans.
People exercising heavily.
Food rich in iron include: spinach and all king of greens, broccoli, peas, tofu, fish and iron-rich meats like beef and lamb.

Biotin
Your body also needs it to produce keratin — the protein that makes up hair, skin, and nails. Although rare, biotin deficiency can cause skin rashes, brittle nails, as well as hair thinning and loss.
Some of the best source of biotin include: Eggs, wheat germ, salmon, mushroom, sunflower seeds, sweet potato, almonds and beef liver.

Zinc
Zinc plays an integral role in building and repairing hair tissues, ensuring that the oil glands around the follicles work easily. One chief sign of zinc deficiency is hair loss.
Zinc deficiency results in protein structure changes of hair follicles, weakening their integrity that leads to new hair falling out quicker than usual.
A few natural sources of zinc:
Seafood such as prawns, crabs and lobster
Oysters
Red meat and poultry
Pumpkins seeds
Chickpeas
Cashews
Almonds
Baked kidney beans
Egg Yolk
Dairy and Soy products

Selenium
Selenium promotes healthy hair growth by activating an enzyme important for the regeneration of important antioxidants in the body, such as vitamin C
Foods rich in selenium include:
Brazil nuts, whole grains, nuts, garlic, liver, tuna, eggs, beans, oatmeal, spinach.
Please note that too much selenium can lead to selenium toxicity.

Melatonin
You may know melatonin as the “sleep hormone” and many people take it as a supplement for a good night’s rest or to cut jet lag.
A cream with melatonin can also boost hair growth or slow down hair loss.

Pumpkinseed oil
Pumpkin seed oil contains a plant sterol called phytosterols that promotes hair growth.
Pumpkin seed oil supplements are usually available in the form of oil gel capsules. Do consult your doctor for proper dosage.
Topical Pumpkin seed oil can also be directly applied to the scalp.

Amino acids
These are “building blocks” for proteins. You should get plenty of amino acids through a healthy diet.
Good food sources include cottage cheese, fish, eggs, seeds and nuts, whole grains, and meat.

Green tea
For centuries green tea has been used as a healthy drink which is also rich in antioxidants. It also does wonders for your hair, by reducing itchiness, dryness, and eliminating all kinds of impurities.

Aloe Vera
The vitamins and minerals present in aloe vera help to detoxify the scalp, thereby helping you remove impurities.
You can also use Onion oil and Lemon juice topically to reduce hair loss. Watch our video to know more about this topic in depth.

What is Alopecia?

Alopecia is a term used to describe the loss of hair which may lead to partial or complete baldness. It is one of the most common hair loss problems faced by millions of men and women across the globe. If this problem is left untreated, it often leads to complete baldness of the scalp. This condition can affect individuals as early as in their 20s till their 60s.

What are the types of Alopecia?

Alopecia can be of three types –

 Telogen effluvium – Telogen effluvium is a rare hair loss condition that leads to excessive hair shedding due to a maximum number of hair follicles going into the resting phase. This results in temporary hair loss. This condition can be caused by physical or mental stress, illness, the side effect of certain medications, etc.
 Androgenetic alopecia -Androgenetic alopecia is a common hair loss condition that occurs due to the heightened activity of Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) hormone in both men and women. In men, this type of hair loss is characterized by hair loss in the temple and crown area. However, in women, it leads to thinning of hair.
 Alopecia areata -Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disorder that leads to excessive shedding of hair on the scalp as well as other areas of the body such as eyebrows, beards, etc. If not treated timely, this often leads to complete baldness.

What are the causes of Alopecia?

Alopecia can occur due to several reasons. Here are some –

 Heredity
 Deficiency in iron
 Protein deficiency
 A fungal infection in the scalp
 Underlying illness
 Mental stress and anxiety
 Sudden loss of weight
 Pregnancy
 Increased activity of DHT hormone
 PCOS and insulin resistance
 Medical condition
 Imbalance in thyroid levels

How to determine early signs of hair loss?

You can spot some common telltale signs that indicate towards serious hair loss problem –

 Excessive hair shedding for no apparent reason
 Hair loss in circular patches across the scalp
 Bald spots
 Thinning of hair
 Hair loss in different parts of the body
 Persistent infection in the scalp
 Receding hairline
 Excess hair breakage especially on your comb, pillowcase or in the shower

What are the treatment solutions for hair loss or Alopecia?

Before proceeding with the treatment plan, the dermatologist will carefully diagnose Alopecia, its possible causes and its severity. This can be done using the visual examination of the scalp and hair pull test. After ascertaining the type and severity of Alopecia, the dermatologist will recommend a customized treatment plan which may include one or more of these treatment solutions –

 Topical medication -Minoxidil is a topical medication prescribed by the dermatologist to treat male pattern baldness. This helps in reversing hair loss by improving the blood flow to the hair bulbs which promotes hair growth.
 Oral medication -Finasteride is FDA approved medication that can be taken orally to slow down the progression of Alopecia. It is important to keep taking this medication consistently to see visible results.
 PRP treatment -Platelet-rich Plasma treatment is an advanced hair regrowth treatment that uses the patient’s own blood to stimulate dormant hair follicles and encourage new hair growth. This treatment results in natural hair regrowth and improvement in hair density. It is a non-invasive and safe way to grow hair that can be cut and styled as you like. Since the plasma is extracted from the patient’s own blood platelets, it does not pose any risk of allergy or infection.

Who is eligible for treatment of Alopecia?
Anyone who is above 18 years old and looking for non-surgical treatment for hair
regrowth can opt for specialized hair regrowth treatment such as PRP therapy.
